About Cox's Bazar Iconic Station

Cox’s Bazar Railway Station is the proposed railway station which will be run by Bangladesh Railway’s East Zone and is being constructed close to the city of Cox’s Bazar’s bus terminal. It will be the most significant terminal for transit between Cox’s Bazar and the rest of Bangladesh because of tourism. The station flavor will be an iconic station that will have an international dimension. As a result, a large number of domestic and foreign tourists will be drawn.

HISTORY

The Bangladeshi government intended to extend the rail line from Chittagong’s Dohazari to Bandarban’s Gundum. The proposed Ghumdhum railway station will be linked to the Trans-Asian Rail Network. Construction of Cox’s Bazar Railway Station commenced in August 2017 Its shape is like an Oyster, which represents the symbolism of the beach. Considering its importance, Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the construction of the railway between Dohazari-Ramu-Cox’s Bazar and Ramu-Ghumdhum on April 3, 2011. However, on 27 April 2016, the project was included as a fast track project and 214 crore Taka planned to spent for its construction.

DESIGN DETAILS

The structural system of Cox’s Bazar Railway Station is shaped like an oyster and can be enjoyed from inside the station. The station is accessible via the Dhaka Cox’s Bazar Highway. Designated drop-offs (i.e. service, regular, priority/VIP) and parking (i.e. 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, etc.) are provided. Also, the safety measures have been put in place along with facilities for users with various disabilities. Since, the iconic building is subjected to high foot traffic every day, therefore all entrances, exits and services within the station are accessible on foot.

Moreover, this will be the first railway station in the sea areas to be used for installing glass, steel canopy, air conditioning, firefighting, sanitary and electrical appliances around the building. Work on the station is just three kilometers from the world’s longest Cox’s Bazar beach.

In addition, a south-facing six-story building is going to be ready and waiting for tourists in Chander Para village of Sadar upazila. Work is underway to build a pedestrian bridge and platform on the east side of the main railway station building. According to railway sources, the only iconic railway station in the country is being built on 29 acres of land.

Trains will start plying from Dhaka to Chittagong by 2023. It will have a special attraction; tourists will be able to go to Cox’s Bazar in the morning and return to Dhaka by night train after leaving their bags and luggage at the station. The concerned people think that this will open new doors in the tourism industry.

According to the plan, the ground floor of the six-story building will have a ticket counter, reception area, lockers, information Centre, mosque, children’s recreation area, passenger lounge and access to the pedestrian bridge. There will be a shopping mall, day-care facility, restaurant, etc. on the second floor.

As per plan, there will be 39-room Star Common Hotel on 3rd floors. The 4th floor houses a restaurant, nursery, conference halls and boardrooms. An oyster-shaped fountain will be created in the square in front of the station building. Passengers enter the station from the side of this fountain. Installing door-window hardware, tiling, sanitary facilities, electricity lines and air conditioning is now being done. At the same time, construction of 20 five-story buildings on the west side of the station building is underway.

Similarly, the people of Cox’s Bazar will easily go to all parts of the country. It will be easy to bring and take everyday products. Finally, this will increase tourist flow in Cox’s Bazar. According to observers, the economic prosperity of Cox’s Bazar region will turn in all directions if the railway is operational.

SPECIALIZED TRAIN

The trains will be run with high-quality coaches on the model of tourist coaches for Cox’s Bazar. In addition, a new project has been adopted for this and 54 coaches will be purchased under this project, which will have wide windows. People will get a chance to see the natural scenery easily.
